Introduction

I thought I'll start off with a brief introduction. I'm a part-time PhD student at the German department at the University of Bristol.

Throughout my time in school and at university, I was confronted with the legacy of the Second World War and the East German dictatorship to various degrees. In my final year at university in Germany, I worked at Colditz Castle (a Prisoner of War camp during the Second World War) and realised how difficult it is to deal with these sites as "visitor attractions". This difficulty got me thinking and that's how I developed my research idea which is broadly about the experiences of visitors at challenging sites (e.g. concentration camps) and the development of these sites as museums/memorials.
